Formations and lineup settings

Compare 3–4 and 4–3 defenses, Fullback and Slot offenses, and the kicker setting in the All-22 Pokémon football builder.

3–4 vs 4–3

A 3–4 defense gives you four linebackers and three defensive linemen. A 4–3 trades one linebacker for another lineman. Choose the shape that fits the Pokémon you want to use.

Fullback vs Slot

Fullback offense gives you a traditional power role. Slot offense shifts the balance toward a quicker receiving option. Neither is universally correct; the best setting depends on the team you are building.

Kicker

The kicker is optional in the builder and challenge setup. Turn it on when you want the complete special-teams version of the roster.

What changes when the shape changes?

A formation is a set of trade-offs. The 3–4 gives the defense more linebacker presence, while the 4–3 adds another defensive lineman. On offense, a fullback gives the roster a traditional power role and a slot setup asks for a quicker receiving option. Pick the shape that matches the players you already have, then use the builder to identify the next missing fit.

Choose 3–4 when…

You have several linebackers with useful attack, defense, or speed and want more second-level flexibility.

Choose 4–3 when…

Your roster is stronger on the defensive line and you want another front player to stabilize the run.

Choose Fullback or Slot when…

Use Fullback for a heavier, traditional balance. Use Slot when a fast receiving profile gives the offense a better outlet.

A formation experiment

  1. Build a lineup in the default 3–4 and Fullback shape.
  2. Record the positions that feel hardest to fill.
  3. Switch to 4–3 or Slot and check whether those jobs become easier.
  4. Keep the shape that improves the whole roster, not just one highlight position.

Formation FAQ

Can I switch after starting?

The builder lets you change the formation setting and review the field again. Challenge runs preserve their own setup once the run is underway.

Is one formation always better?

No. The useful formation depends on the pool, the challenge rules, and the players available to you.
